Recipe for Fun!

STEP 1: Depending on the age of your child, either provide a list of animals or have your child choose one of his/her own to draw.

STEP 2: Find a picture of the animal online or in a book so that your child can refer to it while making the mask.

STEP 3: Cut a white paper plate in half.

STEP 4: Using colored markers, pencils, or crayons, have your child draw the animal's face on the plate half. Suggest using different colors to draw the fur, whiskers, eyes, mouth etc.

STEP 5: Use the other half of the paper plate to trace out ears and then have your child cut them out using safety scissors.

STEP 6: Have your child outline the edges of the ears in a color that matches the animal, i.e., brown for a bear, orange for a lion, pink for a bunny.

STEP 7: Select a colorful pom pom for the nose and help your child glue it onto the mask.

STEP 8: Glue the ears on to the back half of the plate.

STEP 9: To finish, glue the straw or stick to the back of the plate so your child can hold the mask.

Over time, suggest making multiple animal masks. Increase their opportunities to be creative using their imagination to play games pretending to be the animals they’re disguised in.
